I've recently returned to the UK after 20 years in New Zealand, I decided that I was going to return to my first love - 35mm film photography, and preferably black and white.
So here I am - Gary Hewlett, fashion, portrait and travel photographer.
I shoot in an editorial style, but I won't be called an editorial photographer. I'm just a guy with a camera (or three) that can turn your creative vision into beautiful images that reinforce a brand's core values.
I hate being pigeon holed. Yes, I can do editorial photography. Yes, I can take portraits of you and create images of you that are going to engage anyone viewing that image with a sense of curiosity and awe. Yes, I can use my camera to convey what it's like to be somewhere, even if you're just looking at that place through my images.
Just don't call me an editorial photographer. Or a portrait photographer. Or a travel photographer.
I am a just (very good) photographer.
I use 35mm film because it offers an aesthetic that's unachievable with digital technology, and it suits my vision for my imagery.
I love people, which is why I want to capture their beautiful rawness with my camera.
I love travelling. I've done it all my life. Travel shows you how the good world could be if everyone joined forces. I therefore love capturing people, places, food and culture with my camera.
I am based in the UK but I am highly portable. Send me to interesting places and give me interesting people to photograph.
We are all beautiful. Sometimes we need to be brave and look deeply.
Oh, and I like tea.
